These are the sort of comments that you get from the locals that talk about The Greenhouse Effect in Church Road, Hove. An unusual bar that has something to offer for most. Up a few steps, past a cosy seated patio area, to the entrance is all it takes. Once inside, you are greeted by an attractive decor, albeit in need of a little attention, and some friendly smiling faces. It’s not always that busy during the daytime so it’s a great place to just chill out and there is another secluded Patio / Garden area at the rear.
Service from the experienced staff is fast and friendly. The drinks are always reasonably priced but just presently many are being offered at a seriously low price.

The Bar doesn’t just rely on low cost drinks to tempt you in, music is a big thing at the Greenhouse and notwithstanding regular entertainment nights, music is played all day, at a suitable volume of course. The emphasis is music from the 60’s to the 90’s, and there is a fair selection available, indeed they will play requests if they have it, if not, then you are invited to bring along your own particular favourites, just like you would expect to do at a friends house, yes that’s the mood that this bar transmits - a real local for friends in a family atmosphere. But beware, it has been known that a casual drink in the evening can turn into a real Party Night! For our regular entertainment see the Promotion section opposite. The Downstairs Bar at the Greenhouse is a great venue for parties and sees many events and gigs with a regular Reggae session at the end of each month. Again see opposite for more details.

Our World Famous Downstairs Bar
Downstairs at The Greenhouse Effect is our venue space available for private hire.
If you are looking for a space for a private party, corporate reception or perhaps you want to promote your own band or club night then this is the space for you!
With a capacity of 120 people and its own fully stocked bar you wouldn't even realise that there was another bar upstairs.
And, of course, with our late licence there's no reason not to party until the early hours.
